SkinPen® Skin Needling Melbourne
Skin Needling or Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy), is a minimally invasive treatment which causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimizing cellular damage to encourage collagen production and skin rejuvenation. This results in effective remodelling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact to provide deep collagen induction therapy.
Suitable for the treatment of acne or surgical scars, fine lines, wrinkles, melasma or overall skin rejuvenation. The process of this therapy is instigated through a controlled breakdown of the old and damaged strands of collagen in target tissues via microneedling, this leads to the production of newly formed collagen. A series of treatments is recommended for optimal results.

Preparing For Your SkinPen® Skin Needling Treatment
Without any appropriate skin priming, the risks associated with undergoing some aesthetic procedures are increased.
Your Dermal Clinician will advise of a skin priming regime specifically designed to match your skin type and to also address your main concerns. They will explain it to you thoroughly during your consultation to ensure that you know exactly what to do. The skin priming process generally takes 2-4 weeks prior to the treatment day.
Following Your SkinPen® Skin Needling Treatment
Immediately following your SkinPen treatment, your skin is very receptive to all products that are applied to it. This leaves your skin open to irritation and reactivity to certain products and the environment. Due to this reason, you must be very careful with regards to what you put onto your skin and what environmental influences and exposures you come into contact with to avoid adverse effects.
Your Dermal Clinician will prescribe and provide relevant home care advice and products to use in the days following your treatment. It is very important to follow the post care advise provided to you as this helps reduce the risk of unwanted side effects.
After any skin treatment, you will need to limit your exposure to the sun; this includes being outdoors on overcast days, as it is still possible to receive sunburn without visible sun.
FAQs — SkinPen® Skin Needling Melbourne
What Should I Expect After A Skin Needling Treatment?
Following a skin needling treatment, experiences may vary between patients but the possible risks and complications with the treatment include, but are not limited to:
- Redness and swelling for up to 4 days post treatment
- Slight discomfort subsiding within 24 hours
- Short term skin dryness, skin flaking/peeling, tightness, itching and/or burning sensations
- Mild crusting and scabbing for 2-3 days post treatment
- Short term darkening of skin pigmentation followed by lightening
- Reactivation of ‘cold sores’ (Herpes Simplex)
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Every patient varies with regards to their skin concerns and goals, with most skin concerns requiring more than one procedure to achieve desirable results. Your Dermal Clinician will create an effective treatment plan based on your individual needs and explain this to you during your consultation. This plan may be reviewed over time.
How Much Down Time Is Involved?
Depending on the individual, residual redness in the skin can last up to 4 days post treatment. Some patients may be able to resume normal activities immediately following a skin needling treatment with others resuming normal activities the day after. The exception to this is exercise and activities that induce sweating and heat, as they may aggravate the skin post-procedure.
How Long Does It Take To See Results?
It may take up to 3-6 months to see overall results of skin needling. This is because the beneficial effects associated with CIT (collagen induction therapy) rely upon the wound healing process within the skin, which takes time, hence results may take this long to physically appear.
Is The Skin Needling Treatment Painful?
Numbing cream can be used prior to treatment to ensure a more comfortable and tolerable experience. Most patients report slight discomfort around the forehead and lip region, as well as the feeling and sounds of the vibrations coming from the SkinPen™.
